As a result, the non-hydroxylated prealpha chain is degraded within the cell. Thus, the lack of vitamin C in the diet can cause blood vessels, tendons and skin to become brittle and easily bleed, called scurvy. Collagen (collgen) is the most important component of the extracellular matrix, and at least collagen has been found, but the higher levels in the liver include only type I, III, IV, V, VI, X, and VIII.
